Google Pixel 9a Review

Google has launched a new midrange smartphone in the Google Pixel 9 series as Google does every year in its number series smartphones and it is Google Pixel 9a which was released globally on 19th March 2025 but the smartphone will be available in April 2025.

This smartphone is giving tough competition to Apple's latest iPhone 16e smartphone, because its price and some features are better than iPhone 16e. The first new feature is the processor which is Google’s new Tensor G4 chipset which is also used in the entire Pixel 9 series smartphones and the second feature is the battery which is a massive 5100mAh battery and this is the biggest battery in the entire Google Pixel 9 series smartphones. Google has made several other upgrades in the Pixel 9a over its predecessor Pixel 8a which we will talk about and there are also some downgrades which we will talk about as well but before that let us take a look at the key specifications of the Google Pixel 9a smartphone.

1) Google Pixel 9a Design and Colors

Google Pixel 9a looks similar to the Pixel 9 smartphone in appearance, it comes with an aluminum frame with 8.9mm thickness which is the same as the thickness of Pixel 8a and weighs 186 grams which is only 2 grams lighter than the Pixel 8a but the battery of Pixel9a is much bigger than the Pixel 8a which is a good thing because with the same thickness and weight it gets a bigger battery.

Talking about dimensions, the Google Pixel 9a measures 154.7mm (6.09in) in length, 73.3mm (2.89in) in width, and 8.9 mm (0.35in) in thickness, which is slightly larger than the dimensions of the Pixel 8a.

Looking at the front, pixel9a has a center punch hole camera and 6.3-inch display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection and has 83.5% screen to body ratio and it also has an under display optical fingerprint scanner. The display is 0.2 inches larger but has the same Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

There is a pill-shaped flat camera module at the back and it looks good too and there is also an LED flash next to it. The bad thing about the back is that the back part is made of plastic as Google has followed in all  A number series smartphones and did not upgrade this thing but the good thing is they have upgraded the ip rating which is upgraded from IP67 to completely waterproof IP68 rating and Google provides four colors in it which are Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris, Peony and this color matches slightly with the colors of pixel 9.

There is power on/off and volume button on the right side and the left side is empty. There is a microphone on the top and on the bottom side there is a microphone, speaker, USB Type C 3.2 port and SIM card slot with nano SIM + eSIM support.

2) Google Pixel 9a Display

Google Pixel 9 a has a 6.3-inch Actua P-OLED display with a resolution of FHD+. This display has a 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate and has a density of 422ppi. This display also supports HDR10+, full 24-bit depth for 16 million colors. Talking about brightness, the Pixel 9a has 1800nits HBM brightness and a peak brightness of up to 2700nits. 

Now if we compare this display with the Pixel 8a display, the display quality of the Pixel 8a is slightly better due to 430ppi density but the Pixel 9a has a brighter and slightly larger display.

3) Google Pixel 9a Processor and Memory

GooglePixel 9a has Google's latest Tensor G4 chip which is paired with Titan M2 security chip. This processor is an octa core processor based on 4nm architecture and has Mali-G715 MP7 GPU. If we look at the core, it has 1 core (Cortex-X4) at 3.1 GHz, 3x cores (Cortex-A720) at 2.6 GHz, 4 cores (Cortex-A520) at 1.9 GHz. Apart from this, LPDDR5X RAM type and UFS 3.1 storage type have been used in Google pixel9a.

4) Google Pixel 9a Software and Connectivity

Google Pixel 9a comes with the latest Android 15 and will get up to 7 years of major Android upgrades and it also has some AI features which are Magic Editor, Audio Magic Eraser, Circle to Search, Pixel Call Assist, etc. which are good. Talking about connectivity, Pixel 9a comes with Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 6e connectivity.

5) Google Pixel 9a Battery and Charging

Google has provided a bigger battery in the Google Pixel 9a which is a 5100mAh Li-Po battery and it is the biggest battery in all Pixel smartphones and it is upgraded from the 4492mAh battery used in the Pixel 8a. This battery supports 23W wired charging which is upgraded from 18W and it also supports 7.5W wireless charging. With a 23W charger, this battery will get charged 50% in 30 minutes. Talking about the battery capacity, Google claims 30+ hours of battery life and up to 100 hours of battery life with Extreme Battery Saver.

6) Google Pixel 9a Camera

Next thing we're talking about cameras, the Pixel 9a has a dual camera on the back with a 48MP OiS main camera with a 1/2" sensor and it's downgraded from the 64MP OiS camera with a 1/1.73" sensor that's used in the Pixel 8a, the secondary camera is the same which is a 13MP ultrawide with 120° field of view and on the front there's a 13MP selfie camera. With the rear camera, you can record 4K videos at 60fps and with the front camera, you can record 4K videos at 30fps.

7) Google Pixel 9a Price

In the US, the Google Pixel 9a price starts at $499 for 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and this is the only variant of the Pixel 9a smartphone. Below is the Pixel 9a price for different countries
